 A Thought for My Sisters

Over the course of the last two years, I have interviewed and listened to a great number of our sisters, who are wives, mothers, and someone’s sister. As I focused on the concerns of the ladies, I noticed a similar theme. Many of them believe that something is wrong with them. They feel that because their relationships fail, or men don’t treat them with respect or that they are not where they want to be in life is somehow due to a flaw in their character. I challenge this conclusion with a thought of my own.

First and foremost, no one is responsible for your happiness but you. Of course, we all want to share our lives in a blissful haven but one must be happy with yourself before you can be happy with someone else. Also, take the time and energy to better yourself and your family. Get into the things that capture your interest and fancy. Build on factors that better you as an individual. Get into your faith and create a relationship with a higher power. In doing these things, self esteem will be evident and in abundance. Respect will be an unspoken demand. Remember that God’s greatest gift to humanity after the knowledge of self is a woman, the bringer of life, the first teacher, the first love of us all. Don’t ever get so caught up with the world, that you forget how beautiful you are. That everything outside of you is dictating how you should look, feel, or be. If you are living right, taking care of business, raising your children, loved and respected by your peers, and a man cannot appreciate the blessing, and then he has the problem, not you.

Lastly, find comfort in those who love you—your family, your good friends, both male and female. I say this because there are different perspectives you can get from all types of friends. Those who make you laugh those who can give sound advice, those who share and protect your most intimate thoughts, and those who can provide a mental sense of security that is needed during times of frustration.

Ultimately, love yourself first, last, and always. Nothing is more attractive and alluring than a confident woman. Remember that. Only surrender yourself, once you are won. Never lower your standard because when you do, in the end, you lose, believe me.
