The Political End of the Jim Crow Era
Forty years after the deaths of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy, one of the most incredible things in American History occurred last week.
An African American of mixed decent named Barack Obama won the Democratic Nomination for the Presidency of the United States of America. It seems almost surreal that this issue would manifest itself in our lifetime. My point today is not to necessarily endorse Senator Obama. I am merely stating that for such a thing to happen our country has come a long way. That issues like tolerance and character has evolved in our society to the extent of actually judging intention and morals over color, gender, and race. This situation shows that we now live in a time where anything is possible. Young girls can look at the television and see a woman like Hillary Clinton, a powerhouse in her own right, making strides that almost sent her to the white house, and nothing says that it still may not happen. Children of all races will now learn and visual the very real expectation of there are now no limitations on their dreams.
This however does not mean that racism and discrimination no longer exist. It does mean that the broken road of justice and equality is slowly getting a make over in our country and we don’t know how long we will be in the salon chair. I suggest we take this time to pay attention and get involved. Encourage our families to watch the news and teach the children and “adults” to believe and work toward achieving the things that used to be perceived as being “out of reach”.
There was a time when education and advancement was only for a specific class. Then it was made open for all by the efforts of the Civil Rights Movement of decades past. Then the mentality shifted where upliftment and positivity went out of style for some based on the drug culture and bad moral centering. This has grown to the point where policies and thought processes that fueled Jim Crow are almost justified. As a society, we cannot allow this to happen. Change has been the popular topic of late during the present race for the presidency. Let it also be our mentality toward moving forward as a people and a nation. Regardless of the outcome in November, we should all be agents of positive change.
