Our Heroes

During this week we pay special homage to one of our Greatest Civil Rights Leaders, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. He lived, worked, and died in the cause of economic and social reform in our country. He was a man of honor and believed in the philosophy of non-violent resistance in order to promote good will and peace for all people. However and taking nothing away from Dr. King, very rarely is it mentioned that outside of he’s devout Christian ideals, he adopted his non-violent approach from National Indian Leader Mahatma Gandhi.

Mahatma Gandhi was celebrated as the father of his country. He also suffered years of discrimination and successfully organized a campaign of passive resistance, which attracted wide spread attention in India and abroad. He staged political demonstrations that inaugurate the idea of political “fasting”. His movement contributed to India becoming free from 200 years of British Rule.

There are many others who stood up for positive change and despite whether you agree or disagree with their politics, we can all agree that they stood up. Individuals like Muhammad Ali, John F. Kennedy, Fidel Castro, Fredrick Douglass, Madame C.J. Walker, Mother Theresa, and Henry Ford; have all in some way done things to revolutionize thought-provoking ideas that changed the world.

I like to think heroes are people who assist and support social justice and look to better not just the current situation, but help to build a better future for us all through some from of action.

I wanted to end this Rhythm with a thought that is for many of us a lot closer to home. Our parents who have loved, taught, and prepared us in their own unique ways for the world, should also be viewed and acknowledged as heroes.

Your last paragraph, was by far the most important and should be highlighted. Our parents are our true heroes, for without them we wouldn't exist.

On Martin's birthday I took time out to listen to a radio station that was playing a lot of his speeches and spoke with a lot of important figures who were there during Dr. King's years even knew him personally.that he gave before he left us so abruptly and senselessly. I stood in the middle of the room in such awe. There was even a moment I almost came to tears. It's not that I responded in that manner because I've never heard Dr. King's speeches;I have throughout my life. I guess the reaction was triggered because for one I'm a lot older and I have not just an understanding but a BETTER understanding of what this great man was saying to all of us. Not just Blacks/African Americans but to what is supposed to be today a uniformed nation of diversified entities. Also I thought about how far and long we have come and not enough of our people won't acknowledge and learn what our forefathers have done to get us here and won't stop the foolishness that destroys us instead of building and prospering. I hate to say but Dr. King and many others who have fought so hard and fearlessly are probably rolling over in their graves in disappointment maybe even shedding tears (not to sound so dramatic) because we still haven't learned that there's still a sense of urgency out here.

Thanks for this thought as I have often respected what Dr. King stood for, and also his Christian ideals which most people don’t even acknowledge. We should be celebrating His day as Christians to realize that we have a long fight on our hands with regards to upholding what is true, honest, and in Christ’s way of doing things. Dr. King died for it—would we?? Something to think about….God bless always!!
