Our Heroes
During this week we pay special homage to one of our Greatest Civil Rights Leaders, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. He lived, worked, and died in the cause of economic and social reform in our country. He was a man of honor and believed in the philosophy of non-violent resistance in order to promote good will and peace for all people. However and taking nothing away from Dr. King, very rarely is it mentioned that outside of he’s devout Christian ideals, he adopted his non-violent approach from National Indian Leader Mahatma Gandhi.
Mahatma Gandhi was celebrated as the father of his country. He also suffered years of discrimination and successfully organized a campaign of passive resistance, which attracted wide spread attention in India and abroad. He staged political demonstrations that inaugurate the idea of political “fasting”. His movement contributed to India becoming free from 200 years of British Rule.
There are many others who stood up for positive change and despite whether you agree or disagree with their politics, we can all agree that they stood up. Individuals like Muhammad Ali, John F. Kennedy, Fidel Castro, Fredrick Douglass, Madame C.J. Walker, Mother Theresa, and Henry Ford; have all in some way done things to revolutionize thought-provoking ideas that changed the world.
I like to think heroes are people who assist and support social justice and look to better not just the current situation, but help to build a better future for us all through some from of action.
I wanted to end this Rhythm with a thought that is for many of us a lot closer to home. Our parents who have loved, taught, and prepared us in their own unique ways for the world, should also be viewed and acknowledged as heroes.
